I agree with the latter part, would be super risky outside of a large market. The problem is same as it was for Vancouver with the grizz. People don't want to move to Canada and to have a successful expansion you need to have a good team. Even the grizz had good turn out up to the last few years after the novalty wore off and the team was still trash. The Canada dollar was also pretty weak, like 60 percent of usd, so they were paying players usd, but their income was the Canadian dollar. That's not the case now, it's the opposite I think (pretty sure the Canadian dollar is worth more than usd now, not 100 percent sure though). I just think it would have to be close to the border for reasons I said above. As for New Yorks market, it is saturated already, jets and giants are in bigger market areas than buffalo. It's a lot like LA was with the Lakers and clippers. LA was a Lakers town 95 percent.... until recently when the team started being successful. Buffalo moving to Canada would be and smart move for no other reason than that. The reason those Canadian markets would be the best option are because they are eastern. The NFL west coast has die hard fans in oakland, San fran, seattle, chargers, and now people band wagon in on the rams. The mid west united states has a small population compared to either coast, and has its die hard for teams like green bay. The east cost united states has, largely, trash teams with low turn outs. You're most likely a pats, giants, or jets fan in that region. You have Detroit and buffalo sitting right there not too far from the border. You have a loyal fan base in toronto, that has a bad baseball team, and what is about to be a bad basketball team. It's a ripe time for them to get football, and a ripe time for either of those NFL teams to make the short move, retain a lot of its fans here, and gain some over there. At the moment it could be less profitable than usual while still breaking even or up due to the strength of the Canadian dollar vs the usd. That's why it would be a good move, not just because it's a bigger market as far as Canada is concerned, or that they have a stadium, and so on.
The state of NY has about the same population as all of Canada no? Sure you could build a stadium any where but there are only 3 places in Canada to be somewhat viable. The GTO, Montreal and Vancouver. Of the 3 the only place that may support a team would be the GTO. Only a fool would try elsewhere.
