Mark McGwire Admits Using Steroids

"NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. During a 20-minute telephone interview shortly afterward, his voice repeatedly cracked.

"It's very emotional, it's telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it's former teammates to try to get a hold of, you know, that I'm coming clean and being honest," he said. "It's the first time they've ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody."

McGwire said he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earlier in the day to personally apologize."

Yeah, I think it's been painfully obvious. That was a different era in baseball and a bunch of guys did roids. The ones that profited most from it have also paid a heavy price. McGwire is coming clean, and I think he deserves plenty of credit for it. Baseball paid the heaviest price though, the homerun record is tainted, and probably beyond reach.

Is it really so surprising that he did roids? All leaders of our free country, the biggest role models we have, the persons charged with leading our people, have all lied to us so it's really no surprise that everyone else is lying too.

The Hall of Fame votes this time around is what I think convinced him the need to do something.

It will take a while, a long while for him to get there. I would almost bet the farm the votes will never be there.
