Racers should have comparisons but measuring their deeds in their times, whit all technology, environment, and rules they were surrounded by etc. The great racers throughout F1 history were made by their bigger records and numbers and many of them had been forgotten, not by the enthusiasts, but by the average media, mainly overcome by the record numbers updated by the passing times. Who can forget Gilles Villenueve (father), the most fearless race driver of all times; Nigel Mansel, the lion; Niki Lauda, the plane pilot, who came back from an accident which burned his body an face and won the following championship; Fangio, the biggest champion; Ricardo Patrese, fearless flying Italian; Jacks Stuart, the flying Scottish; Jim Clark, another fearless and champ at 2 different categories; Emerson Fittipaldi, champion at both F1 and F Indy (won the most danger race Indianapolis 500 miles); Alain Prost, the professor, the most smooth driver and many many others if I put down here would be hard to read? They're all great and brought lots of fun and excitement at their times.
Now, Lewis Hamilton is the shinning guy of the moment.
But one thing is for sure, that there were further more excitements during the old times F1.
