Having followed up their 2-1 win over Korea DPR with a 3-1 defeat of Côte d’Ivoire yesterday, brazil became the first side from Group G to book their place in the Round of 16. portugal, for their part, thrashed the North Koreans 7-0 today to move on to four points and take an important step towards joining A Seleção in the next phase.
The meeting between Brazil and Portugal in the final round of games could well decide who finishes first and second in the group, while the Ivorians' fate is no longer in their hands. Didier Drogba and Co now need a Portuguese defeat and goals aplenty against Korea DPR.
As it stands
1. Brazil, 6 points, +3, 5 goals scored
2. Portugal, 4 points, +7, 7 goals scored
3. Côte d’Ivoire, 1 point, -2, 1 goal scored
4. Korea DPR, 0 point, -8, 1 goal scored
Next up
Portugal-Brazil, 25 June, Durban, 16.00 (local time)
Korea DPR- Côte d’Ivoire, 25 June, Nelspruit, 16.00 (local time)
Qualifying criteria
According the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
Permutations
- Brazil have qualified for the Round of 16. A win or draw against Portugal in their final game would secure top spot in the group, whereas a defeat would send them through in second.
- Portugal need a draw against Brazil to qualify in second place, while a win would take them through in first.
- Côte d’Ivoire’s goal difference is -2, compared to Portugal’s +7. As a result, the Africans need a big win over Korea DPR and a Brazil victory over Portugal, hoping that they can score enough goals and the Portuguese concede enough to overcome their nine-goal deficit.
- Korea DPR can no longer reach the knockout phase.
