is it time to ditch this competition? It was devised when the football league was a closed shop that you could only enter by being elected in (and in turn someone else had to be elected out). Since the early 80s though the conference winners have automatically come up, more recently 2 teams with playoffs.
Also the days when only football league clubs were professional are long gone - most clubs in the 5th and 6th tiers are full time now.
So in that respect, the football league is endless and stretches all the way down the pyramid.

In the last 20 years, the top clubs - the ones in Europe - have been given a bye to the latter stages, making it a lot harder for lowly clubs to enjoy a big occasion against them. Replays have been ditched (further damaging the experience for the lower clubs), and more and more teams have been playing their 2nd string, consequently attendances in the early rounds are low, and it's at the point where it's becoming a modern equivalent of the Full Members Cup, which was ditched after just 6 years.
Should Hardaker's Folly finally go the same way?
