A team with bunch of skilful and expensive players sometimes could not beat 100k budget team. Do you think there is a downswing in football? for ex, MU Are there variance? and what do u think a game which has the most similarity to poker.

There is variance in everything really..

Chess is often associated with poker and people often say chess is 100% skill with no luck involved I disagree, Is it not lucky that if an opponent who is just a little better then you makes a mistake that they don't make 9 out of 10 times?

Football (American Football)

There is all kinds of variance - Refs make a bad call, A fumble, A dropped pass, a player getting knocked out on a big hit, injuries, weather, a shanked punt, a muffed kick return...

I'm sure in soccer the refs make bad calls due to flops which could be considered variance or miss an off sides or whatever...

In the chess case, I'd call that a skill error, not luck.

One of the good arguments for NFL (IIRC it's Football Outsiders that I'm borrowing this from) is around fumbles: when your defence forces a fumble, that's a skill. When your offense allows a fumble, that's a skill error. Recovering a fumble is mostly down to luck though, as the random chance of which way the ball bounces or who it bounces closest to is the biggest determining factor.

Well anything could be skill error.. Sometimes recovering a fumble comes down to hustling and putting yourself in a position to make a play such as recover a fumble. Since you're more likely to recover a fumble if you play till the whistle..

If you have a referee with poor skills and ability then sure there can be lots variance in his decision making or the calls he makes.

Or if he has a poor stamina or maybe he had a few pint before the game then sure he can bring a lot of variance.

What if he is a big fan of one or two teams himself and gives marginal decisions in favour of these teams so that they have a better chance.

So is football a game of variance ?? Hmmm .. well lets just say not as much as poker is ..... layingba
