OK,,
Live tournament,158 players with the $100 buy in. 25000 chips 20min blind levels 10k guarantee

down to final table, 8 players left.
card dead for 2 levels, floor level calls last hand, do to closing time. (warnings were given earlier , about time))

sitting at about 400k chips.

sitting utg 3 ,high jack,, 8 players,

hero: AK o dealt, last hand, blinds 40k 40k -20k. avg stack sizes 490k

checks around, ,, more chips more money,

i decide, no one will risk large portion of stack this late, last hand.

i push all in, - cut off , button folds, small blind folds,

villain bb calls with about 370k

i think,,,,oops!!!!!!!

shows a3s

runs out, i win nearly doubling up to second place.
as they work out pay outs, i head to wash room and run into the bb player at the cashier, he was getting his 400 dollar pay out for 8th

ask me how much i was getting so i said about 1700,

he said, he made the biggest mistake of his poker life, not realizing the icm valve of his chips.

the call cost him about $300 . icm valve - payout

i took the risk thinking everyone would fold due to icm payouts, why risk the call and risk the 300.

i was wrong, in my assumptions, about skill level of opponent, , he was wrong for not understanding ICM and his risk being taken with a junk hand.

turns out each chip was worth ..0019 cents x 900,000 = happy payout...

moral of this story,

ICM matters

just because they make the final table, doesn't mean they are using your logic!

Nice! Did you finished as the chip leader?
Also nice you got AK for the last hand
I wouldn't had taken the risk with A3s, tho

Back in the 70s and 80s, they didn't have a reception to place you at your table...you could just walk around until you found an open seat. I remember my dad walking from table to table for about 15 minutes before he sat down. When I asked him why, he said he was looking for the worst stupid players to play against so he could maximize his winnings. Makes sense. These days, you are placed at the table next in line for a new player (although you can then request a table change)...nobody gives you an IQ test to play poker. There are more than enough players with more money than brains who can't wait to give their money away at the poker table...they always think they are better than their real skill level. Good for you taking advantage of it.

Wow I would have been upset that there was a time cap for the event. You get all the way to where all the money is at 8 handed and the event won’t let you guys play it down? What a ripoff imo.

ICM is a construct created by high stakes regs to get rich fish to over fold in big money FT spots. :sneaky:

Act accordingly

How many chips did the A3s player have in total? Was he the chip leader or did he have a big stack? Then the call was not necessarily wrong from my point of view. You could have any pair you wanted. But if he himself had fewer chips than you or a similar stack then I can't understand the call, in which case I would definitely have folded.

I guess he thinks you have a pair, so his A still has a chance to overtake.

Maybe from the button position it would have been fairer to defend this hand, but even so, it's hard to say. It could be that your table image may have led the player to think you had a pair, so he decided to bet on a flip.

...I believe that the villain's line of thought was a possible bluff in his all-in where he would be winning with A3, in my opinion, a very limited scenario...he made the worst decision at that moment and should have given up...if your image was of a more aggressive/bluffer player, the bet could be valid, but any line of thought different from that, he played in a very wrong way
