There are so many quotes about how much there is to be learned about or from poker. From the most obvious like poker skills to existential life lessons. Even the most seasoned of players never stop learning, or at least that's the received wisdom.
What is the most recent lesson you learned from or about poker that stands out?
The one that most stands out to me falls in both categories. While it is a skill that benefits my poker play, it applies to life just as much. If not more. It was not something that was learned in a single moment. It must have gradually soaked in sometime over my 2 year hiatus from poker I just returned from. Which is the ability to recognize my ego and set it aside. While not letting it make me feel small or affect my decisions.
Poker is one of the only places where there are so many eyes watching and keeping track of all my decisions on a subject. When I first started playing and for some time after. My assumptions on other players opinion about me really affected my play. Especially in situations where I often sat down with the same players like CC games. The Irony being that this caused them to correctly form the opinion I was in fear of in the first place.
Learning to not let this affect me at the tables is something that will benefit me for the rest of my life.
"Poker is interesting," says Doug Polk. "The game is very complex, and even when you get quite good at it, you always have more to learn".
"The game that takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master.” - Mike Sexton
"Poker is a never-ending learning process. The more you play, the more you learn." - Johnny Moss
