There are so many quotes about how much there is to be learned about or from poker. From the most obvious like poker skills to existential life lessons. Even the most seasoned of players never stop learning, or at least that's the received wisdom.

What is the most recent lesson you learned from or about poker that stands out?

The one that most stands out to me falls in both categories. While it is a skill that benefits my poker play, it applies to life just as much. If not more. It was not something that was learned in a single moment. It must have gradually soaked in sometime over my 2 year hiatus from poker I just returned from. Which is the ability to recognize my ego and set it aside. While not letting it make me feel small or affect my decisions.

Poker is one of the only places where there are so many eyes watching and keeping track of all my decisions on a subject. When I first started playing and for some time after. My assumptions on other players opinion about me really affected my play. Especially in situations where I often sat down with the same players like CC games. The Irony being that this caused them to correctly form the opinion I was in fear of in the first place.

Learning to not let this affect me at the tables is something that will benefit me for the rest of my life.

"Poker is interesting," says Doug Polk. "The game is very complex, and even when you get quite good at it, you always have more to learn".

"The game that takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master.” - Mike Sexton

"Poker is a never-ending learning process. The more you play, the more you learn." - Johnny Moss

something I learned playing poker is managing a bankroll and dealing with losses and I learned that poker is a long term game where you have to be patient and not in a hurry

Don't play drunk, a couple of times I've played like that and I've lost a lot of money.

The main lesson in poker? Never give up! Never! Even if you have 1.5 big blinds, you are still a contender to win the tournament. If I had no poker in my life, it would be a very sad life.

True. Another main lesson: Don’t focus solely on your cards. Position and aggression is just as important. Hand selection, position and aggression is sometimes refered to as The Tripple Threath. If you have at least 2 out of these 3 attributes you’re in good shape.

Since I started playing poker, I have learned a lot daily, it is difficult to say a recent one, that's why poker is wonderful, always in constant learning

Aggression and luck are essential to be successful, especially in freerolls, of course luck helps those who have skill.

Most recent? That's a tough one. There are so many older lessons that I either keep relearning or have reinforced.

I guess it would be that if I get called two streets in a row I'm most likely beat. Until the river, of course. Then all bets are off.

In theory I agree. But if you have been at the green felt jungle for 20 years it can be a tall order to learn a lot daily. But after scrutinizing hand histories post session there will almost always be a lesson to be taught or an after thought to be dealt with.

I feel like it helps you to value information. The more information you have the better decisions you can make. In poker you realize how important the power of position and fold equity are. The players that dont value information are the people you see open limping. If you see a player open limping with players sitting out then you know they do not value information at all.

Wise words about the “triple threat”. Thank you, I will definitely keep them in mind! ;)

I finally realised how important it is to be focused, attentive, patient and disciplined. It took me many years, but I finally realised it :)
I don't know, maybe if it wasn't for poker, I would have continued to live my hysterical and chaotic life.

The most important things:
- patience pays off
- no invincible player/hand
- the luck factor is unavoidable
- you can stand up and win even from the most hopeless situation

My most recent poker lesson is that I really need to keep my ego out of my decision making.

I treat poker as a business and never get cocky, but I don’t despair either. You can either strive to break free from this burden or let it bury you.Traveling, in my opinion, is essential. It opens our minds. It invigorates. It is scary, but it makes you grow as a person.
