If you are first in you should NOT limp in. However in low stakes cash games online, limping in from early position is common. After the initial limp, most players will also limp in.
If you are in a middle or late position with a marginal hand should you limp in, raise or fold?

Its a common tactic also when trapping, the number of times you will see a player with KK or AA limp bet to induce the raise by another and then they 4/5 bet plus is an obvious ploy. If the player is then reraised - you can often predict an all in jam.

what are you considering to be 'marginal' in this spot?

Typically I would raise to isolate but if it's a super passive/calling station table & you have a speculative hand that does well in multi-way pots (ie. Suited Ace, SC's, pair 22-55) I'd consider limping along with them. If there's players in later positions who are more aggressive I'd refrain from limping along with a hand I'm just going to fold to a raise ... 'but' if it's the type of table where once they've limped they are always calling a raise, then again it could be ok to limp along behind them.

If I have only a so-so hand and want to see a flop, I limp with the others. If I'm sitting on KQ or KJ, I raise.

A great rule to follow is we do not make most of our profits from marginal hands so we should not be trying to build pots with them.
Yes, we win sometimes but they are also the hands that we lose big pots with when our V river better hands.

Therefore, we are over limping trying to hit the flop hard turning our marginal hand into a much stronger flopped hand or folding the worst marginal like T6off etc

Learn how to react to limpers correctly and analyze this play that you can encounter quite often. Find the patterns that your opponents play and learn how to act against them.Although in most cases it will be to your advantage that open limpers usually have no idea that they are using a bad strategy.Having a limper reduces the likelihood of success in stealing the blinds. Our opening range depends solely on our position at the table.

Limpers limp with a capped range. The won’t limp with top hands.

They are broadcasting weakness. Poker is not a social game. Therefore you should raise 3BB with one limper, 4BB with two limpers……

If your limping then I guess you don’t mind playing multi-way where your hand, good or bad, has to either hit and hold or just hold as is. This is almost impossible because you can go for a long time between winning pots like this. That is how a lot of people play though so if you want to play like those players go for it. If you want to try something else more fun then just raise.

generally limpers are more frequent at the beginning of a tournament, there we must play more cautiously by playing more values from our hand and applying a lot of folds.
However, when we face limpers we must play aggressively, punishing them heavily, to isolate ourselves against as few players as possible.
Generally in the more advanced stages it is unlikely that we will see a limper, if at all, we should exaggerate in punishing them and play in position against them with a smaller bet size to control the pot (since the blinds are higher)
Never play limper either as it is a play with an EV- (expected value) in the medium long term, as we play multi-way pots (many players) and it will be more difficult to scare away the players from the pot. (we play exclusively by cards).
