Satellite tourney on the bubble

I played a satellite tourney last night a £50 entry into a £300 DTD monthly event. I didn't start it until an hour after it had started as I got in late. However I managed to get down to the last 21 players and 20 won a seat. This player to my left was going all in with every hand as he had 250,000 chips and was a massive stack at the table. The blinds at that time were 2-4000 and I had only 13000 left in 21st position. You could see where you where in the lobby.
Anyway this kid with the massive stack went all in again as he'd been doing for the past hour, I had A8c now heres my thinking. His range is so loose, I think I am in front he can knock me out though. If I win the hand I think I win my seat though. If I try and last out I've only got 3 rounds left and hope someone on the other table gets done before me.
I called then and he showed 57o, hey I'm in front but I hit my ace followed by a 5 and a 7 the turn showed another 7 to kill me off. I do often think you may be set up here to fall by the RNG. Anyway its advice I'm looking for, I did have the best hand but it didn't hold. Cheers.

Why would you think that you're being set up? I understand why people think that online poker is rigged, as I've had beats every bit as bad as the next guy and run horrendously for weeks (even months) at a time. Having said that, I don't think it's rigged. I do think that the randomization algorithms are pretty flawed, but: 1. It's basically impossible to program true randomness; and 2. I don't think the algorithms are intended to favor anyone. I just think that they aren't as random as we would like them to be.

You got your chips in ahead, which is what we all want to do. Sorry it didn't work out for you. Now shake it off and play your game.

Most players make the mistake of folding themselves down to basically nothing with nothing more than a hope of making it and I think that is a terrible strategy. The big stack was doing exactly what he was supposed to do and put pressure on everyone, you made the right move got it in ahead and got unlucky, it sucks man but honestly the other strategy is a losing one.

You did well and you managed to have about 66% to win and get the ticket. I dont know what the big stack wanted to do with that gamestyle (even he goes sitout he gets his ticket), maybe he was bored. He was lucky.

I find in satellites that even more players make the mistake of thinking they need to accumulate chips in spots where taking a higher variance line is always a bad idea. Satties are about preservation over accumulation (depending on payout structure obv.).
I love it when you see two players with 20bb stacks battling it out nearing the bubble while there's a bunch of very short stacks. 'Or' the guys with 12-15bb's who open & fold to a shove.. or open > c-bet then give up. Spewing off in terrible spots.

I also like the idiots who think they can win two tickets in one satty.

I did make the comment in the chat box to this big stack guy why was he raising every hand when he had locked up his seat ages ago, his reply was 'it was fun' then the moderator told me off 'no coaching and play your own game' I think the guy was a dick it made it very difficult to play on this table or get chips to secure your spot. I never got much higher than the bubble spot in the tourney because of this guy. You just couldn't enter pots without having the goods.

A8 not as big a favorite vs two live unders as you might think. Something like 60,40.. i probably wait it out but thats just me. Online id use the clock an wait. I mean if i play for hours just to push ace rag im more likely to push way sooner but again thats just me. Good luck.

Deciding whether to try to fold your way past the bubble in a satty can involve more than just considering your stack and your ranking - for instance, how many other players with small stacks who will have to pay the blinds before you do again.

i top 5'd a doyle's room sat. outta 2000 ppl one rainy sunday morning. The win gave me a 40$ sat. ticket for the 200k later that day. That sat. payed 12 tickets for the big tourney and 13th was the hangover....long and gruesome story short after 11 hrs of free-rolling i busted out 13th by aq vs my ak....the rollover for 13th $ 3.47....ughhhh

if you are going to hit the blinds before the other short stacks- think you have to go

if the other shorties have around 3bbs and hit the blinds first you really have to sit on your hands

is often the case in Satellites and freerolls! in real money tournaments will not find this! no one will go for the expensive to the bank with rubbish on their hands ... in free tournaments constantly moving pocket good hands with garbage turned into gold!

Not quite sure what you mean Edik. As regards the others and the rate of blinds eating them up I had just gone through the blinds and had 13000 left and was in 21st place basically they could have all folded me out i would have had to take on someone at some point.

Personally if I had just paid the blinds I would have waited it out. No reason to use your time bank (bubble you play hand for hand) unless the blind structure was a turbo then I would use my time bank. I would calculate the other short stack to see if he would blind out before me, so by using my time bank then, the blinds would increase before they came back to me.
