I wanted tips on materials (free or paid) that really help those who are starting out in poker. Can you recommend what worked for you?

Start by taking the 30-day Cardschat course, it's free, and the content is very good, I'll leave the link below.:)

This is a short list of books that I think are the most useful and deserve the attention of every player.
Jared Tendler "The Mental Game of Poker"
Ed Miller "Texas Holdem for beginners"
Ed Miller "Professional NL Holdem"
Ed Miller "Small Stakes NL Holdem"
Andrew Seidman "The Easy Game"
Tri Nguyen "The NL Holdem Workbook"

There are all sorts of books out there..
One I particularly enjoyed is by Alexander Fitzgerald, The Myth of Poker Talent

Talent is cultivated, worked at constantly. It's not something you just have.

This is one of the best books I read and I would recommend this one also. Anything by Alex Fitzgerald is good stuff.

Yeah, In the book he points out that Phil Ivey spent years broke playing whenever he could, same as Daniel Negranu who went broke many times to gain the insight he now has.
Oh, and both of them have "Master Class" courses which may be another way to pick up educational points. Notably if you are a visual learner rather than book learning.
