In Starting Positions: Making bigger raises pre-flop is a good strategy, as you will have more players acting after you and a greater chance of facing resistance. Aggression is used to protect your hand and gain value early on.
In Late Positions: You have more information about the relative strength of your opponents' hands, allowing for more informed aggression. If everyone has checked before you, an aggressive bet can take the pot immediately.

In both your examples aggression is the solution to winning the pot.

Aggression is often successful when your opponent misses the flop.

And the best way to limit the number of opponents hitting the flop is to limit the number of opponents who see the flop by raising or re-raising preflop to try to isolate one villain.

That way you have to outsmart just one guy. ;)

Truth. Having just one opponent makes it easier to read your game positions.
