In poker, position—where you sit relative to the dealer—is a powerful tool. Acting later in a hand gives you more information about your opponents’ actions, making it easier to control the pot and bluff effectively.

Early positions require tighter, stronger hands, while late positions (like the button) allow you to play more hands and gain control. Remember, a strong position can be as valuable as a strong hand!

In poker, position is everything! Sitting later in the betting order gives you the advantage of seeing your opponents' moves before you act, allowing you to control the pot size and make smarter decisions. Early positions require caution with only strong hands, while late positions (like the button) let you play more hands and bluff effectively. Remember, sometimes where you play is just as crucial as what you play!

I agree mostly. However, some players use bets out of position on the flop or turn, especially when first in, very effectively. It's either a bluff, a semi-bluff or a protective value bet. Then it's up to the player(s) in later position to guess correctly. It doesn't have to work that much to be EV+.

The easiest way to play more in position is to not open limp.

Position It's everything in poker! Too bad I don't follow that to the letter.

I agree with you, playing in position gives you a lot of advantage against the opponent, I avoid playing from starting positions with hands that are not so good and I avoid bluffing in these positions

You’re absolutely right! Betting out of position can definitely be a powerful strategy as well. This keeps opponents guessing and adds another layer to in-game tactics and makes them to rethink . Thanks for sharing!

Completely agree—avoiding that is crucial especially with a good hand!

Yeah sticking strictly to position strategy can be tough. It’s easy to slip up now and then, but just having that position-conscious mindset can make a big difference over time.

Exactly! Playing in position gives you so much more control and keeps you from risking chips with weaker hands from early spots, it's usually not worth it when opponents still have full-strength ranges.

One thing that’s often overlooked is how position affects not just hand selection, but also bet sizing and timing. When you're in position, you have the flexibility to size your bets based on your opponents' actions—whether to extract more value or control the pot. Conversely, when out of position, it’s often better to keep bets on the smaller side, especially with weaker hands or draws, to avoid over-committing.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of checking in position. Sometimes, just showing a little patience can extract more value later in the hand. Remember, using position strategically isn't just about playing more hands—it’s about playing each hand smarter!

Playing in position is actually more profitable, and knowing how to play in position increases our chances of making money, but sometimes we have to play in other positions too to deal well with the variations.
