Hi ! I have a question about calculating the equity of the hand. My friend and I have recently started playing poker. He believes that when calculating equity, we should take into account that some of our outs may be blocked in the hands of other players. Thus, we have not 9 but about 7-8 outs per flush. Is that true?
Not sure exactly what your looking for. Based on what you said I think your looking at the odd to make a hands.
So lets take your the flush draw. normally you have 9 outs and you believe the other guy has a big pair. 9 outs times 2 means you would hit the flush about 18% of the time on the next card. If your on the flop you would have 9 outs times 2 twice or about 36% of the time you will hit the flush. You could remove for blockers of the random hitting one of your cards twice for the 3 of the kind but its so race and complicated I would not worry.
Equity is a bit different. You never know what the other player has as he is playing a range of hands. Say I am on the button and raise about 25% of hands and you have 99. Based on my range vs your hand you have about 56.9% equity in the hand. Yes you maybe way behind bit over the range of possible hands I have your actually ahead of the range. On a Q38 rainbow flop you now have 57.6% equity in the hand but the problem is this, If I have AA you only have 9.98% equity against my hand. If I have QQ you only have 1.71% equity needing runner runner 9's to win. On the other hand If i have 77 you have 91.6% equity in the hand and if I have A7o you have 87.2% equity. You see the problem here. Without a equity calculator and not knowing what the other player has you cant tell what your equity really is.
