Just curious I'm not A bad player I'm not the greatest either but I have a hard time knowing when to fold of course I hate to throw pocket axes but I don't win nearly with those as I do with let's say a 98. So any clues on how to tell when to fold and when to hold.

Welcome to the forum Animusvixen,

It is hard to give any advice since every situation is different. What is a good decision in one scenario might be a bad one in the next.

If you want refresh your basics (and beyond) we do have a great free course in here that you can take at you own pace. It is taught by two poker professionals.

Folding a good hand that is likely to be a loser is the hallmark of a winning player, and I'm still working on that, I think experience is the key to make great folds.

Difficult to find a one-size-fits-all solution for this. I had to struggle with this myself. A good starting point for me to work on this issue was to look more intensively at absolute vs. relative hand strength. Good luck.

That's what I think is what keeps people coming back to poker. Very seldom in this game do we know that we have the nuts. So most of our moves are simply guesses, hunches, and playing the odds.

This is a very good point and is a key starting point in our skill growth process.

A simple example is preflop AA vs 1 player is 80% to win vs 3 players it may be less than 50%

AA post flop is very strong vs 1 player on a board of 357 but vs 3 players it is a hand we may want to fold if one of the players want to play for stacks

So while the absolute strength of AA is the best the relative to the situation and board strength of AA can lower to the point of being very low as in the 357 board AA has 7% equity vs 64

Hope this helps

I Think it depends on the others players behavior during the hand.

You to the texture of the board or strength of someone betting. If you have one pair the bet is too ridiculous strong just fold wait for a better spot. It will come.

Thank you all so very much!!! I try to keep in mind "just fold you can always play another hand with better odds" but then my curiosity gets to me and we'll you know.... CURIOSITY always did kill the cat.

But I'm definitely appreciative of all of your thoughts and statistics and I might just take that class. Thanks again

It all depends on the situation.
It is also important to fold your pockets.
Good luck.

Hey there animus vixen, here are a couple of videos geared towards beginner/intermediate players that I think you'll find quite helpful on this topic

This will give you more of an overarching framework and theory to help navigate situations. And that's what you really be able to make decisions at the poker table!

And here is a full playlist if you want to go deeper!

Top pair be it Aces or top pair on the board is still just top pair. How often is top pair a winner by the river. Just a pair, just another fold when the situation calls for it.
