Hey everyone!

I’m just starting my journey at 5NL, and I want to focus on improving my fundamentals—specifically bet sizing, understanding position, and building preflop ranges. I know these are crucial skills for becoming a winning player, but I’m not sure of the best way to learn and apply them effectively.

Here’s where I stand right now:

  • Bet Sizing: I understand the basic concept of value betting and bluffing, but I sometimes struggle to adjust my bet sizes depending on the situation or stack sizes.
  • Position: I know late position is advantageous, but I’m still figuring out how much wider I should open from the button versus under the gun.
  • Ranges: I’m using a basic preflop chart, but I’m unsure how to adjust it for different table dynamics like loose players, short stacks, or aggressive opponents.
Do you have any tips, resources, or practice routines for learning these concepts? Are there any specific books, videos, or tools that helped you when you were playing at these stakes?

Also, how do you approach reviewing your hands to improve on these areas? I’ve been saving some tricky spots but could use advice on how to analyze them better.

Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to any suggestions or guidance from more experienced players.

I guess this depends on if you want to 'play' poker or win at poker?
But like Kenny Roger's song The 'Gambler' goes - the best anyone can hope for is to die in between winning and loosing ;)

Good Luck, Gary :geek:

For a guy who plays 5NL I think you are very competitive. I would recommend this book for further learning.

Alton Hardin: Master Micro Stakes Poker.
The book can also be purchased for a reasonable price - as an audiobook - on Audible. The book is an excellent read for any poker player.
Good luck and feel free to ask any question.
