Hey players šŸ˜‰.

Just two quick question on when to take a break in poker…

How many days in a row before a break?
How many hours before an extended break?

Recently, I’ve played 5 days in a row for an average of 8 hours a day. I’ll admit, I’m exhausted. This is when I usually take a couple of days to recharge, focus, and start again. However, it’s difficult doing this when you’re on an upswing.

Anyway, just thought it would be interesting to hear how different people are and what their playing times looked like.

Cheers.

Only you can know your limit. But it's interesting that you mentioned the rise, you can get overconfident and play carelessly, but that has nothing to do with fatigue. But I understand what you mean, you're afraid of resting and losing a good streak of victories, but don't fool yourself, big victories don't come all the time.

If poker is like work, then you definitely need a break, you need to rest for 2 out of 7 days.

You are so right. I’ve played for long enough that I’ve been through the times of feeling invincible and been rightfully humbled. I like to think I manage myself better now and usually stop when I feel lethargic and/or not playing my best.

That being said, I have noticed a drop in my energy. Could be down to age and doing too many other things, but I’ve been contemplating an extended break to complete whatever else and come back.

Anyway, really appreciate the response.

Thank you.

It depends on you, sometimes you play for months without needing a break and sometimes you play for a week and need to take a break, it depends on how you are feeling.

First, you need to understand what poker is for you: is it a job and your main source of income or just a game for fun. If it's like a job for you, then I think there should be some kind of schedule, for example, you play 5 days a week and two days off, and the days off don't have to be in a row, you can take them any day you want, regardless of whether you're playing in the black or in the red. But if you're playing for fun, then I think you shouldn't overload yourself, you should take a day off as soon as you're tired. Personally, I play poker for fun, and I always listen to my body, if I'm tired of the game, then I can take a break for a few days or a week, or even longer. When I feel like I want to play again, then I continue playing. Of course, the best thing is when there's freedom of choice, and if a person is tired and wants to take a day off, then he takes it, in this case, burnout will definitely not happen.

After 3 or 4 hours playing, I take a 15/20 minutes break

I usually play in the evening or at night, but sometimes it's hard at night when I'm tired and want to sleep. But everyone knows their own limit of how much they can play, so it's all individual.

Hi :)
I play poker 4-5 days a week. And in general, I can say that I don't need a break. But there were times when I could play 7 days a week and such intensity had a bad effect on my results. A break is a necessity for most players, it's not normal to play without a break.

I think every player should decide how much to play in poker. It all depends on the needs and free time. For example, I've been playing poker non-stop for many years (that means I play at least 1 tournament every day) and I'm not thinking of taking a break as I have a goal in poker that I haven't reached yet.

The goal is to make so much money in poker that I can afford to use that money to buy 2 apartments in London or Paris. Only after that I can afford to take 2 weeks vacation somewhere in Amsterdam. And then I'll return to poker. :)

Whenever you are tired, I recommend not playing. And whenever you play, do not play very long tournaments one after the other.

I am actually studying for a couple of hours every day. Playing 4 to 6 days a week but never 4 in a row. It's working fine.. as per the time limit per day it depends on how I'm feeling and how my decisions are going.

According to brazilian laws if you work more than 6 hours you have the right to take 1 hour break and so I think it should be. Also, keeping the allusion, the working schedule is 5x2 (five days of work and two to rest). I would go further and say that we all should work less and enjoy more, so if one can, one should work 4 days and rest/live for 3.
Either way you should always listen to your body.

As you said:

In general, I play 4-5 days a week. But I very rarely play more than 4-5 hours a day. Although there are exceptions on weekends, there are weekends when I play for 10-12 hours and it's really exhausting. For me, 2-3 days a week break is more than enough.

For me it's 2 options: when I'm in a really bad run and nothing seems to work or when I just can't stand to play poker anymore.

Any time you ask this ? you are at least close to needing a break:) Yet is your choice in on a run its more difficult if losing in bind can be same thing trying to win back...>Taking that break is a good thing though to me...

Hard to answer your two questions. It depends on whether you play to make a living at poker or for entertainment. It depends on your ability to focus and your stamina. It depends on your job hours, if you have one. It depends on how much of your social life you want to relinquish. It depends on family obligations...eg: grandchildren. But it mainly comes down to this...if you are married, do you want to STAY married? Which is an interesting question...my wife or poker...tough choice at 71 years of age!!!
