To be honest, I have not been interested in the story of any of the great players, how they achieved success, and what helped them do it. I think that many of them have very different stories. But I can say from myself that in order to become a great player, you need to be able to control your emotions, have composure, patience, observation, the ability to make sound and conscious decisions under pressure from opponents. And of course, have enough experience and understanding of the game itself, you need to learn to feel poker and everything that happens at the poker table. This experience comes gradually, I believe that it is impossible to learn to feel this game in 1-2 years. You also need a goal, desire and aspiration to become great. There is no way without it. There are many good players, but they do not have the goal of becoming great, they play in local poker clubs, periodically travel to other cities or countries to play, they earn their living this way and at the same time feel free. So here everything depends on what the initial goal of the player is).

Having said that, away from no-limit hold 'em there are some games that have an element of skill. These are stud, stud hi-lo, razz, and to a limited extent pot limit Omaha hi-lo. Omaha is a lunatics game. Draw poker, pot limit, some skill. Have played triple draw only two or three times, don't like the game so can't speak to that.

The old adage in real estate says that the 3 most important factors to buying property are : 1) location, 2) location, 3) location. The same thing applies to poker: 1) patience, 2) patience, 3) patience. It takes patience to play with discipline, to take the time to study (reading and watching Youtube, PokerGo, etc.) and to put in the hours of play in a good learning environment...by that I do not think you can really learn very much playing freerolls...people play differently when they don't have any skin in the game...Freerolls are often like a Wild West Shootout. Even small stakes poker will teach you more.
