I would def want it to be recognized as a sport as it does require lots of mental aspect of games. Yes luck is involved but which sports doesnt require sometimes luck to win anything ?

Exactly. I think now that it have E-Sports category, and the fitness aspect doesn’t count to be considered a sport, poker be considered a sport is more than correct.

It is unlikely that poker is recognized as a sport, of course, since it is played for money + a lot of excitement, at most only some types of tournament poker can recognize this, and even then it is unlikely

Poker is a sport , not ofcourse like some other sports that we watch on the Olympics , it is a unique sport , demanding special skills. It's not only luck , at least for tournaments , this is true .

Given the countless calculations and analyzes a gamer must do, his brain can burn as many calories as a professional sportsman. It can be physically stressful to sit for hours and hours during the day and always have to be in full concentration. Those who engage in long, multi-day competitions usually prepare and work out at the gym to be able to physically face the challenge.
It's obvious that poker involves math, skill and competition. Each player aims to defeat their opponents and use different strategies to dominate the game. The sporting component in these competitions is very large. Surely the players themselves, who invest a long time in improving their technique to perform professionally, would more easily agree that poker is indeed a sport.

I had to use Google Translate to understand the article. It certainly would be great if poker was to be recognized as a sport, but that is not how I interpreted that article.

All I saw was that the World Poker Federation was accepted as a member into International Mind Sports Association (never heard of them o_O). As a result poker has now a similar standing with chess and other board games but only in the eyes of IMSA.

Poker is the only form of gambling that can be considered a sport, at least by the Oxford Dictionary definition. No other gambling game involves individuals or teams competing against each other. If you thought playing cards was an idle person's game, you were wrong. The Supreme Court ruled that it is, in fact, a "physical sport." Sport is defined as a competitive activity that requires physical exertion and skill. Mind sports simply replace the physical aspect of this with intellectual ability. Poker most certainly falls into the category of mind sports, because players can learn and master skills and techniques to find success in the game.

Which Supreme Court ruled that poker is a physical sport?

As far as I was aware some years ago the Supreme Court of NY declared poker was a game of skill (as related to gambling laws) but the Supreme Court of the US itself (the highest court) actually refused to hear the matter. But, as noted which Supreme Court are you citing as ruling poker was a physical sport?

Regarding 'no other gambling game involves individuals or teams competing against each other'... what about Bridge?

It was Bridge which was proposed for Olympic consideration but promptly refused, I believe defined as a 'mental sport', which indicates poker has little chance of ever becoming an Olympic Sport ( I only mention this as the fanciful notion frequently arises in the forum).

I don't think poker will be considered a sport. Poker is a game of skill, but it has too much randomness. In my opinion, this eliminates it from being a sport.

Perhaps pasting the article for you to read would be beneficial for you my friend I will add this article was made in 2015 so poker has actually (according to the article) been declared a sport since 2015 👍🏻

As far as the statement no other gambling game involves individuals or teams competing against each other' I got this from here which is an interesting read 🙂

Much love to you

It certainly is. Poker is an intellectual sport just like chess. And our community is a community of intellectual athletes :)
And I'm not kidding, I really think so.

Poker is a mental stress in which you have to think and calculate to win, which is why there are many sports that, like poker, apply strategies

So, the court was in india and one judge opined (quote) " When you play cards you use your hands...It can be declared a physical sport, cant it?"

And the matter went to court so a card manufacturer could save the tax levied on sporting goods (less) as opposed to recreational goods?

That about sums up a 'supreme court rules poker a sport' assertion? Alrighty then.

I live in Ukraine, and in our country there is an association of tournament poker and for several years tournament poker has been recognized as a sport. It suits me.

I also consider poker a sport similar to chess , live tournaments like the wsop require physical preparation to spend so much time in the game
