Years ago my friend Ole Bjerg - a prolific Danish sociologist - wrote the book: Poker - The Parody of Capitalism. It is a scientific work. Ole does not play poker himself, but it is a stunning blueprint of how late capitalism - “senkapitalisme” - is reflected in the game of poker. The book investigates poker as a cultural expression of significance not unlike art, literature, music or film. Tracing the history of poker and comparing the evolution of the game to the development of capitalism Ole complicates prevalent notions of “Casino Capitalism” and correspondingly facile and simplistic comparisons of late capitalism and poker. The book is a theorethical sophisticated, highly original and innovative treatment of a social phenenomen - poker - and contributes greatly to our understanding of the nature of contemporary capitalism. In his research. Ole interviewed some of the best Scandinavian poker players - on account of anonymity. The book recieved great accolades in the academic world - especially in The US. If you happen to be an intellectual or openminded person this book might be for you. If not, well some GTO refinement is probably better time spent.
