Earning a living by playing poker

I’m curious, is it really possible for ordinary people to organize life in a way, that you can play poker and make good living without having full-time job? As for me, it’s more likely just a beautiful way to romanticize poker, to make us believe, that we can be high on life and spent all the time on your own precious self: getting up whenever we want, going to gym and shopping, meeting friends, taking a journey etc...and that’s all just thanks to poker😊

In reality you come back home at 9 pm, gloomy and exhausted, and start playing poker to try to win 25c in MTT😂

Do you think that professionals get up whenever they want, go only to shops and gyms, and travel endlessly?
You are wrong, you have the wrong idea about professionalism. Professionals therefore became professionals, because they devoted all their time to hard, persistent daily work. Poker for a professional is work, hard, daily and routine work.

It's possible if you are determined have discipline and hopefully years of experience. But it's not a path that offers job security because you can't win them all and there may be days you dont get paid at all so there is lots of risk hopefully you have capital to start with.

I was also serious about going professional about 4 years ago, and now I. It has not been done yet. At 30 years old, I am still dividing my time between work and poker. I also don't feel confident enough even though I won a few Mid-stacke tours. Poker doesn't seem to have stability yet

Online it's extremely difficult to be a professional player today. Especially if you live in a "developed country" with a high standard of living and therefore high prices for food and rent.

Live it's still possible if you have access to casinos or clubs that run games with a lot of recreational players.

The majority of online professional poker players work as much as anytime worker. They have to follow a schedule. Of course they can choose the hours they want to play (unlike a regular job), but they play many hours everyday, sometimes even more than a regular full time job. It's not an easy job.

Probably. Were in france esrlier this year and this "come back home at 9 PM to start playing poker" didnt turn out too well ...

Yes it is possible for ordinary people to become poker professionals. However, it is a grind. Nothing is guaranteed.

Online you have fast paced games, you can multi-table but computer based RNG can be rough and it seems to flip continuously on the turn and river.

I’ve heard that the most successful online players spend hours searching for the right tables to play at. One with a loose recreational players that like throwing money around. But even then, they could get lucky and wipe you out.

Online is easier to relocate though. You can live in a country with lower cost of living so you don’t have to win as much to pay bills. But then you’ve just moved away from friends and family.

Live poker can be easier, if you’re good at reading people. You can see who is more there for fun than winning. Who’s been drinking the most etc. But you won’t play as many hands. The times that most people are there will be after hours so your “work” schedule will take time to get used to.

In general, it’s doable, but it would be a very stressful lifestyle. It would be good to have a sizeable bankroll to start with too.

Its possible, but its a very stressful thing to do. You are practically living life on the edge. Three bad days and you are already stressed out like crazy. Very hard mentally to live life that way.

it really depends on what kind of life style you what. minimalist or buy flashy thing.

You can earn a living by not only playing poker. Theres no book or maestro that says you cant do other sht

It's possible, The vast vast majority of players are losing players. If you try to play any real stakes, especially in cash games, it will be very difficult to make meaningful money unless you really dedicate time to practice and improve. With that said, if you have the time to really study/practice, it's possible. Whether or not it's possible for you I have no idea.

If you mean playing mainly online I wouldn't even bother trying and I'm a long time winning micro/low stakes player. Online it's a great hobby played for fun and can be some extra cash in your pocket as a micro/low stakes player. It's simply easier to make any meaningful money or a living with a real job. Online at the stakes it takes to make a decent living at least in canada are hard and the risk you're playing cheaters isn't worth it. Facts of life are no matter what it is in life when there's any amount of meaningful money on the line you'll find cheaters.

As a Canadian I might even have the advantage of not having to worry about paying taxes either and I still wouldn't bother trying playing mainly online for a living. In general Canadians don't pay taxes on lottery or gambling winnings. I believe if you read the fine print if you win over a long enough period time and big enough and likely without another source of income....sooner or later they be coming after you as a Canadian. Not a tax expert but did a number of years goggled this topic and read up on it a bit.
