Casino Chip Collection Needs Help

First off, thanks for having me as part of the CardsChat forum. I’ve been playing for 40+ years and have been collecting $1 casino chips ever since Resorts International opened in Atlantic City in May of 1978.

I haven’t played a single hand of live poker since 29 Feb 2020 when the pandemic hit. I’m more than itchy to play. But more than just play, I enjoy traveling to new casinos and poker rooms to pick up $1 chips to add to my collection which is approaching 4,000 unique $1 chips. I also grab extras when I can which I use to trade with fellow casino chip collectors as this, along with poker, is my passion as well as a lifelong hobby. As soon as this pandemic subsides, I’m hitting the road to make the short trip from the panhandle of Florida to Houston and the surrounding area.

That’s a little background. Are there any other casino chip collectors on the forum? I know that there’s at least one as they pointed me here (thanks Ashley). If so, shoot me a message or reply to this thread if you’d like to either trade chips or if you’re able to help grow my collection by sending me chips from your local room which I may not have (I can either send you chips from my local rooms in trade or ship you paypal for your efforts).

Hope to hear from both longtime casino chip collectors as well as new collectors. I’m more than happy to assist with tips, suggestions, or appraisals. Thanks.

While I love CardsChat, it's really not the place to find chip collectors. In my three plus years here, I have run across exactly zero. I collect playable sets. If you are a singles collector, I assume you are already a member of CC&GTCC? If not, it's the place to to check out.

I like your Gulfport $1, do you have 200 that you want to sell?

Sorry, I collect single chips, so don't have "hundreds" of the chip in my avatar to trade/sell. Also, if you looks closely, that's an error chip, and I've only every seen that one. I do have 2 of the "standard" Grand chips available for trade though.

Yup, I'm familiar with the site you mentioned. Perhaps too familiar. It's a small group of old guys that run that site and seem to do everything they can to run off new collectors. I'll just wait until enough of them die off and someone steps up to bring the site back to where it once was when Greg ran it.

These poker forums are always a long shot if you're only looking for casino chip collectors, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Lots of new, young poker players can be found that don't mind helping out another poker player, especially if they start collecting from the rooms that they've played in.

Cool, I hadn't noticed the error. I really like the Gulfport $1, but the spot pattern is not my favourite. On PokerChipForum, I am virtually alone in this opinion - they all put it in their top five $1s EVAR.

I may have seen this error before. Are you a member on PCF?

Yes I am, but again, few if any single chip collectors on that site. It's fairly dead too.

Help me out with this "collecting" racks and racks of the same chip. What's the point? Initially I thought it was for the person to assemble a home game set of chips, but it seems like a lot of guys on that forum relabel the chips and/or, if they actually do play poker, (which few do) they play for 5¢/10¢/25¢. Ok, I can see a guy playing nickel poker with his buds and wants a "real" set of chips, but a lot of those guys have racks and racks of chips! Do they view them as investments of some sort, or are they actually "dealers" and not so much "collectors"?

When the Hard Rock in Biloxi opened I think I picked up 3-5 racks of $1 chips for one of them. I really don't get the point. Help me out.

Collectors call those edge spots "inserts". In fact, it's because of those asymmetrical inserts that I do like that $1 Gulfport Grand chip. I'd like it more if they would have bothered to design 2 different inlays (the center design) so each side could have its own. This way an insert variation could develop, causing many collectors to double the number of chips they picked up, thus earning the Grand Casino 2x the profit.

There aren't that many insert variations out there, and fewer now that the manufacturing process allows the inlay and inserts to not only stay on the same side, but to even prevent any rotation. The $1 Harrah's Gulf Coast chips are a good example. They're 2-sided with asymmetrical inserts, but not a single variation exists and all of the inserts are always in the same position. That is to say that the violet insert is always in the 6 o'clock position and they run violet-yellow-green clockwise around the front side of the chip.

The $1 Saloon #10 in Deadwood, SD, has a true insert variation. The inserts run blue-orange clockwise on one chip, and orange-blue on the variation.

That's kind of like asking "why do these guys collect hundreds of different singles? You can't play with them!"

I think a large majority of the collectors on PCF play home games with their chips. The stakes vary. As such, having collected sets from real casinos, chips that represent the actual stakes are often difficult to come by unless your game is at least $1/2. This results in customization.

I can't explain why people buy the amount that they do. The amount should be appropriate for the game being played. This is another function of the site - to discuss breakdowns that are optimal for specific games.

I used to collect $1s from all over ( had over 2000) but now just collect Canadian chips. I'm always up for trades or buying $1s I need.

Hmm, thought I had some that could work, but apparently only a couple. Years ago, was in the mood for ceramic and older and was trying to build up a variety for fun home games. Ended up going wsop chips for the bigger tourneys as I needed a lot. Guess i stopped looking for older chips after that. Anyway, only one $1 and the lowest I had in the nevada jacks was a $5.
