It’s good to be Antonas Guoga. Just days after winning his first tournament in two years, Tony G struck again, winning the Super High Roller Bowl’s $100K Short Deck event for $1,169,000.
Guoga, whose brash style often terrorized his opponents back in the day, and which prepared him for a career in politics in his native Lithuania, made his triumphant return to tournament poker last week, winning a $25,000 Super High Roller Bowl short deck event for $382,500 on Thursday.
He followed that up on Monday in another short deck event at the Merit Royal Hotel & Casino in Cyprus. Guoga’s latest win came against a small field of just 26 players, but produced the largest cash of his long and brash career.
Just four players returned for the final table of the event with eventual third-place finisher Danny Tang holding the lead when play began. Guoga and Paul Phua both doubled through Santi Jiang, who was the first player eliminated from the day’s action. After Tang’s eventual elimination, Phua and Guoga began heads-up play, where Tony G amped up his trademark aggression, forcing Phua to fold multiple hands.
In the end, Guoga shoved all-in with a suited ace-king, only to crack Phua’s aces when he went runner-runner to make a tournament-winning flush. The win brings Guoga’s total live winnings to nearly $9 million and, perhaps more importantly, gives him even more ammunition to use against future opponents at the poker table.
