everyone says that super system and super system 2 are the best books ever made, however are they really, i have them here now however have not read them yet, just wondered if their are any books that can match up to those 2. i have Daniel Negreanu's Power Hold'em Strategy and that is a great book especially for learning about small ball and how to take the luck out of the game,
are there any books you think are better that the super system series?

?? I don't know which "everyone" you've been listening too. Super System was probably the best book, at the time it was published. Things have changed a lot since then.

I like it's sections on the other games besides hold 'em. But, for hold 'em it definitely isn't.

Yes... what he ^ said!!
Super System at the time it was written was the best book out there.
I've read both volumes and personally don't like them.
I'm also curious as to who the 'everyone' is??

note - SuperSystem doesn't come close to making my Top10 poker books list (not by a longshot).

As far as which books I consider to be better.... 'lots/many'. As far as listing them goes.... 'it depends' - - it depends upon what type of book you're suggesting (ie. playing low limit cash table NLHE, SNG strategy, NLHE MTT, high stakes cash game NLHE, live play, etc.).

My favourite MTT NLHE book by far is "Winning Poker Tournaments - One Hand At A Time".
My most recommended book(s) to read for NLHE MTT would be "Harrington On Holdem Vol. 1 & Vol.2"
etc. etc.

As already pointed out, super systems were the best books written at the time, a whole LOT has changed since then. Doyle's books started it all and now they are considered VERY basic reads for the EARLY beginner. With that said, there was a couple pieces of info in them that I learned and use to this day, but that was when I first started playing hold em.

The two things I learned (years ago):
1. Premium pprs - the majority of the time you'll either win a small pot with them or lose a large one.
2. Flopping sets - bet into your opponent, he won't expect it and will pay you off. (Now this last is subjective, and depends on a lot of factors, but before I read this, again, years ago, I used to slow play flopped sets every time).

I've been saying Super System is an awful book for small to medium stakes NLHE for... well, pretty much since I first read it a few years ago. If you don't play for high stakes against weak-tight opponents then it's just not the book for you.

The other games it covers might be a different story.

SuperSystem is generally considered a must read because it covers all of the main poker variants and is very easy to read. That being said I didn't find it to be particularly helpful past the first read (whereas my favourite poker books can be read time and time again) .

I think the specific strategies in the Holdem section aren't so great for the way people are playing now, but Doyle still has a great way of getting across some intangibles that are valuable. The other sections were quite helpful to get a quick overview of how to play mixed games.

I think Harrington is good for tourneys.

The books that I've read that have had the biggest impact were:
  • No Limit Hold 'em: Theory and Practice David Sklansky, Ed Miller
  • Harrington on Hold 'em Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments (Vol. 1 & 2)
  • Cash Games Vol. 1 by Dan Harrington
  • Sit 'n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman
  • Phil Gordon's Little Green Book

Thanks for these suggested readings, I've read some of them already but I noticed that a couple of ppl mentioned Phil Gordon's Little Green Book.
Would this be considered a must read?

Also want to add that I really enjoyed Ken Warren Teaches Texas Hold Em and it's home work styled learning curve.

I would not consider PG "must-read", but the others I listed, yes I would.

PG discusses, in a more conversational way, basic, common-sense, approaches to playing the game. You will find the same thing from DH & Sklansky, but embedded amidst a tremendous amount of other instruction.

I found Super System was really good for other variants of poker for someone such as me who had never played them really before. I'm pretty sure it would allow you to play micro stakes 7/8-game and make a nice profit through reading it and following what it says.

As has previously been stated, for NL holdem it's pretty much useless nowadays. I personally like Phil Gordon's Little Green Book although the Harrington books are also great reads.

Harrington's series is good for micro & low stakes tourney, where ABC poker prevails and bluffing is generally unprofitable.

"Winning Tournament Poker - One Hand at a Time" is excellent for higher stakes tourney (and to some extent cash games), where your opponent actually think and won't call you down on the way to the river with Ace high or bottom pair. I would wholeheartedly recommend it too.

I'd say that SS us something you want to make sure you fully understand, because it's influenced so many people's games. However, a lot of that information seems to have trickled into other people's books over the years. It's always nice to read it directly from the original author though.

People keep responding with great tournament books
If you come to my 5 10 NL cash games with a strategy from any book other than Harrington or Doyle i will be investing your money in my account at the end of the night
I have been a pro for five years and all books are good advice but at the end of the day I will realize which book amateurs are reading and gear my strategy to that book.
Doyle and Harrington(Cash game book VI and II)both advocate an LA strategy in their books so do I
Get your intuition in check and mix your game up
Good luck and I hope to see you on the felt

I think videos from the internet players posted on the torrents sites are the best thing out there. U can find thousands of them. Books are good to learn pocker. But there are a lot of real situations that cannot be covvered by books. Watching players intuition and how they explain how they are playing at that moment it is the best thing. If u do not want to experience all kind of stuff on yourself u have to watch the others. And happely there are a lot of videos where the players are not always winning. There are a lot players that post their bad sessions not only the winning ones. U can see the great side of the poker and the dark side.
